A Monday Poem

What Were They Thinking
By Julie McElhinney

Riding along wind in your hair
Facing the world without any cares,
Nothing behind you horizon in the distance
A moment of peace can be lost in an instant.

You don’t see him coming the crash is so fast
You’re left wondering how long this pain will last,
Sirens ring shrilly from afar
You look to the sky and see a shooting star.

With an angel at your side you know the end is near
Somehow you’re not scared you don’t even shed a tear,
You hear someone say the other driver had been drinking
And you spend your last moments wondering what they were thinking
